Continental Regiments
List of Continental Army Units in 1777 to 1780
On 16 September 1776, Congress adopted the plan known as the eighty-eight battalion resolve, it called for eighty-eight regiments organized according to the structure approved in 1776. Congress' estimates of the population of each state governed its allocation of regiments.
On December 22, 1776, Congress authorized an additional 16 regiments. Unlike the September regiments, the "sixteen additional regiments," the artillery regiments, and the light horse were Organized directly by Continental authority rather than by the authority of the state governments and were placed completely under Washington's control.
